How does The Sync System work: The espresso machine or enabled device records the time of the last brew and sends this information to the grinder via Wifi or wired cable. The next time the grinder is used, it compares the time of the last brew with the target brew time set in the grinder recipe. If there is a discrepancy between the times, the grinder automatically adjusts the burr distance coarser or finer to refine the grind size and ensure the brew time matches the desired recipe target.

The Sync Scale is our gateway to a fully connected espresso ecosystem. This smart scale doesn't just weigh and time your shots; it sends the measured time via our Mahlkönig Cloud to the Grind-by-Sync grinder.

How does the Sync System algorithm work to make automatic adjustments to the grind size?

The Sync System reacts to data it receives via cloud communication from the espresso or Sync Scale machine concerning extraction times. That means the Sync System will adjust the grind size whenever necessary. In some instances, it might not make any adjustments for an entire shift if the shots stay true to the recipe brew time parameters. In some situations, the grinder might adjust the grind size multiple times to stay on recipe. The algorithm will adjust based on the results of the last shots. If the brew time parameters are off across the last shots, it will make a burr size adjustment.

If the shot runs too fast, indicating a coarse grind, the algorithm within the grinder signals the electric motor to refine the disc distance which therefore adjusts the grind size. If the shot is too slow, indicating a fine grind, the grinder adjusts to a coarser grind size. The Sync System uses the target extraction time of the espresso machine or Sync Scale to automatically adjust the disc distance on the grinder.

What is the main advantage of the Sync System?

The quality of a coffee beverage is subject to the variance of several parameters during the brewing process such as the roast of coffee beans used, equipment stability, and environmental conditions, like temperature and humidity. The Sync System is the first connected coffee system that brings automation to traditional espresso grinders and espresso machines. While there are some super-automatic espresso machines that advertise similar features, the Sync System has two major advantages: precision and control. Because the Sync System combines grind and brew event information, it’s the only automated grind adjustment system that offers the same level of recipe precision as manually adjusting your espresso grinder.

Grind-by-Sync (GbS) is an innovation brought to the newest Mahlkönig espresso grinder range. When connected to the Sync ecosystem, GbS grinders automatically adjust the coffee grind size to achieve the target brew time, which is set within the recipe. The grinder receives the espresso brew time from the coffee machine or Sync Scale and intends to keep the brew time within a tight range of the recipe parameters by considering the brew time variances and adjusting the grind size accordingly.

The Sync System is most accurate with the weight-based espresso grinders incorporating the load cell scale as this eliminates one major variant, the weight variance of the ground coffee: These grinder models are the E65W GbS and the E80W GbS.

The Sync technology is also available with our time-based espresso grinders, using an algorithm to adjust the time when the grind size is changed, to help maintain the coffee weight output: These grinder models are the E65T GbS and the E80T GbS.
